The Conti DW's are excellent, but I do find they tread squirm pretty badly until they wear a bit. I just did my first rotation after about 4500 miles and with the higher tread back on the front, I noticed it instantly. Other than that though, really good so far.
These tires are nothing short of amazing, i've never felt my previous gti or my new one perform the way it does on these tires. I can't recommend them enough, they're really *that* good.
Contis are on the car now - awesome.
The sumitomos are no longer available. I found a website that has some Fulda's and Continentals in the size we like. They are more expensive, but better than the sumies.
Mounted (4) Continental ExtremeContact DWS 225/40ZR18 = $587
Yeah, I think you can't beat the Continental Extreme Contact DWS in cold weather and heavy rain for the price, and they also last long, don't get hard or noisy, and hold up well also when it is 120F outside. I started on the third set in my Passat, very satisfied.
I drive on Continental Extreme Contact DWS year round in a JSW. Great in rain, good in snow, and I off-road the car some and they handle that as well
For what it's worth I have a 2009 VR6 sport with over 70K miles and so far it has been pretty much bullet proof. I do most of my own maintenance so everything has been done properly and on time. The tires were replaced at 60k miles and there was still 4/32" tread left on the OEM 235/45/18 Conti's.
I've been very impressed with the EV's performance in the snow. I'm running 15" Continental ContiWinter Contact snow tires, and use them year-round since I don't put many miles on during the summer months.
Knowing this, and having been uninspired by Michilen X-Ices I tried out Continentals Extreme Winter contacts last year. They have about 80-90% of the traction of the Bridgestones, but their compond wears longer, doesn't feel as squirmy as the softer Bridgestones. They even feel pretty good when its dry out.
