My 535i with the 740d thermostat sits at 90-95 during normal use, even sat stable at 95c during 40c weather in traffic. When beating on it in the mountains got it up to 99 at like 28c ambient.

Pros: stable 90-95c temps

I have this exact engine and installed a diesel thermostat. Previously, with the standard thermostat, the plastic timing chain guides would start to disintegrate after three years, but now I have no problem with that. The engine temperature is around 96°C.

Pros: no guide disintegration
Cons: guides disintegrated (standard)

Wahler Thermostat

I got a Wahler thermostat once who was the OEM maker for MB, the only difference between the Wahler and the old MB one was that there was a spot where the MB logo was, on the Wahler one that logo was gone, looks like it was there, but someone with an angle grinder scratched out the MB logo so it probably came off the same line that made the MB part.

Pros: OEM quality, identical to original

I have had a car not bleed properly/ run hot (but not overheat) only when using the wrong thermostat. Replacing it with Wahler fixed the issue.

Pros: fixed bleeding issue

My 2007 MKV 2.5 Jetta is still having overheat problems even after changing the tstat to a OEM (Wahler) and the waterpump to one with metal impeller, which works way better than the original.

Pros: metal impeller works better
Cons: still having overheat problems
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta

I’ve replaced it twice and it starts leaking from there in about 2000 miles or so. I’m willing to bet that thermostat is a Wahler brand. They are known to leak like this.

Cons: leaks after 2000 miles
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 3218 km

I bought a 2022 X4 about a month ago from BMW. Had it for 2 weeks and got the same notification. Took it to BMW ( I got the warranty) and adjuster came in from the warranty people on Monday but haven’t approved the repair yet. They said it was also a thermostat. Seems like this is a common thing in these cars ? Mine is at 61k miles, bought it used and only had it for 2 MF weeks.

Cons: thermostat failure, common issue
Vehicle: BMW X4
Mileage: 61000 km
