Thermostat Wahler or Duralast

Wahler Thermostat

Got the Wahler on my 2008/2011 and it was identical to the MB part except the area that had the MB logo on the original one was ground out.

Pros: identical to OEM part

installed new Duralast (motorad) 207F thermostat and it seems to have fixed the issues. Gauge is coming up to just a hair under the 210 midpoint and the live data on my scan tool shows the ECT is running between 205 and about 214F after fully warmed up and moderate level accelerations and driving. The front heat is now scorching hot and the rear heat is much improved as well.

Pros: fixed issues, improved heating, stable temperature

Wahler Thermostat

I've had the thermostat on my M272 engine replaced by an indy mechanic. OEM was Wahler, looking at the original the the Wahler I got, the only difference was the spot where the MB logo was on the original, it was grounded out by some grinding disk on the replacement one.

Pros: identical to OEM part

I got a duralast part from autozone with a lifetime warranty for 25 bucks. My jeep has been been running well for the last year since the change to the duralast part

Pros: running well, lifetime warranty

I've replaced my thermostat with a new wahler one and I have the same problem which is that it openes at around 70°C and cools my engine to almost 50°C, from what I understand the thermostat is mechanical and electronically assisted to open faster/wider

Cons: opens too early, cools too much

I just replaced the original thermostat at 90,000 miles because at highway speeds it would run slightly cold and took a while to warm up from cold. The new wahler replacement takes just as long and will actually run cold intermittently when not on highway. Occasionally it won’t deviate from center on the highway.

Cons: runs cold, slow to warm up, intermittent cold running

Mileage: 144841 km

Thermostat was ALSO replaced when the water pump was, with a Wahler unit. Guess I got 10k miles out of it?

Cons: short lifespan

I'd advise taking that Duralast thermostat out and installing either an OEM unit or a unit from a trusted brand (such as Stant). If the Duralast gets stuck in a closed position, the SUV will overheat. If it gets stuck in an open position, the engine won't reach operating temp, and you'll have issues such as running rich. Duralast has a nickname we techs refer to: Duracrap or Dura-doesn't-last.

Cons: gets stuck, engine overheating, poor reliability
Vehicle: Kia Sorento
