Starter motor OEM Toyota or Bosch

OEM Toyota Starter motor

I have a 2006 corolla with 350,000 miles. I had to replace the OEM alternator and starter. Transmission and everything else is original, save consumables.

Pros: original transmission, steady diet
Cons: valve cover gasket leak
Vehicle: Toyota Corolla
Mileage: 563270 km

I replaced the starter in my '09 with a reman Bosch back in '20. Been flawless ever since, can't say enough good things about mine.

Bosch Starter motor

I literally just did this job on my mom’s 08 528xi last weekend. I used a NEW Bosch starter (I specifically avoided remanufactured).

Pros: new starter, good quality
Vehicle: BMW

I just replaced my starter motor on my N210 4Runner. What you're experiencing is identical - battery is fine, clicking + no start. I replaced a door actuator just prior and had disconnected the Negative on the battery as part of the door sensing sequence and it seemed to awaken my starter issue. I too had periodic starting to none.

Pros: fixed starting issue
Cons: periodic starting problems
Vehicle: Toyota 4runner

For me it was the starter. It was replaced a few years prior at a local mechanic and I don't know what brand they used. I got the part numbers and bought a Bosch equivalent from fcp for less than 300.\n\nI dont know exactly why and neither do the mechanics that wanted an answer if I found one. The old starter spun fast enough to start injection. Maybe just not enough power to get it past the initial revolution after firing. All I know is its been close to year and hasn't done it once since I replaced the starter. It now starts first time everytime.

Pros: starts first time everytime

Bosch Starter motor

The newer Bosch and subsidiary starters use a different kind of magnet that is more fragile. Apparently, people were whacking them pretty hard and breaking the magnets, hence the sticker.

Pros: different kind of magnet
Cons: magnets more fragile

One was from rock auto and was new Bosch. It looked different than the one in the car but matched overall length and teeth. The other one was a rebuilt bosch from advance auto. They tested it for me in house before I left. I can hear the gear spin but not engaging.

Pros: tested in house
Cons: gear spin, not engaging
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta

I think the napa one is most likely to last more than 10 minutes. But my car is on its 5th starter with barely over 100k miles because the previous owners mechanic kept using anything but Bosch.

Pros: likely to last
Cons: short lifespan
Mileage: 160934 km
