After every diagnostic I could think of I got a Duralast reman starter from Auzotone and the engine cranked right over first try so looks like a defective reman was the problem. Lesson learned that you can’t always trust bench testing to find issues.

Pros: engine cranked right over
Cons: defective reman

I’ve always trusted Autozone with parts and so far haven’t had any issues so I’d recommend duralast. I used two duralast starters before and they’ve worked fine.

Pros: worked fine

I got a starter from AutoZone (Duralast - remanufactured from Mexico) and installed it myself. Anyway, I got it free, took careful note as to where all the wires were supposed to go and then set about installing the other starter.

Pros: installed it myself
Vehicle: Volkswagen

Cons: slight grinding noise

My experience with Duralast starters have been horrible. They sell them with a 'lifetime guarantee', which means that every time they fail once a year or so, you have the pleasure of crawling under the car and switching it out for another one that is going to eventually fail!

Pros: lifetime guarantee
Cons: fails once a year
