Oil filter OEM Toyota or STP

STP Oil filter

Personally, I just use whatever is cheapest, as long as it is rated decently by the API. The way I see it, oil is really just oil. It's slick, it lubricates, it has whatever weight and viscosity it says on the bottle. The API makes sure it reaches those standards along with any claims on the bottle, so I'm comfortable saving money there. I've never had any issues in my many tens of thousands of miles of ownership and there's no sludge buildup or any worrying deposits inside the motor that I've seen when I've worked on it.

Pros: cheap, reliable, no issues

OEM Toyota Oil filter

For my car that would be about $800 at the dealer (they are usually $35-$40 with coupon). Five years in and I am right around $1000. It has had about eight oil changes at the dealer (generous $400), an alignment ($100), a battery ($90), a set of Michelins ($400), a wiper blade refill ($10) and a couple engine/cabin air filters (maybe $50).

Pros: carefree thing to own
Vehicle: Toyota Yaris

STP Oil filter

I have been using these since I bought the car (4 years ago) and they have filtered the oil fine, and also look just as the OEM ones did when it was time for an oil change.

Pros: filtered oil fine, good for 4 years
