Oil filter Fram or OEM Mazda
If budget, buy the Fram with the dark end cap. Or one of these Mobil 1 filter Bosch Wix Gold All of these are efficency rated to a good level and will filter particulate to a better level, thus, less wear.
Mazda recommends their oem filters on skyactive motors. Its because they dont have the flaps that keeps oil pressurized. Any wisdom says you dont need it but go ahead and buy them online as I paid $5 per.
In terms of filter and oil, I have an NA and I personally like to buy the OE filters from Mazda and for oil I just use the oil recommended in the owners manual, id assume the ND uses different oil so I’d say just check that.
Fram is actually pretty underrated. People see the price and think it's cheap junk, but fram actually has a good filter with low micron rating. Fram actually invented the oil filter. Look it up. I have noticed a couple quality control problems but that's why I look at the filter before I buy it. Never had a problem
I’ve always used fram. They get the job done, and never had issues.
I use fram filters, full synthetic 5w-20, for the last 150k miles. Total cost is like $25 at walmart. I am right at 210k miles now with oil changes EVERY 5k miles.
Runs good, but burns a quart by 5k miles.
I lost a good 440 to a Fram that came apart. Anomaly or otherwise, that was the last Fram product I ever bought.
My father changed a Fram filter years ago and noticed the filtration media became dislodged and looked like if you crushed a piece of paper in your hand. So the filter wasn't doing anything and luckily it didn't get sucked up in the engine and cause catastrophic damage. I highly advise against buying Fram.
Crap quality. I quit using them after I had one start leaking the day after I put it on.
Thin shells, terrible filer media and questionable anti-drain back valves.
