Short answer - it was the ignition coil. In the end - it serves as a reminder that just because a code (or lack of) seems to point to a specific component, you MUST diagnose. ECM costs $300 - $1000 including coding - a Denso ignition coil was just over $100.

Pros: Denso ignition coil fixed
Cons: ECM replacement expensive

I had the same deal, but none of the similar error codes. Verdict: it's probably your ignition coil. Overtime they crack SOOOOO SLIGHTLY that they let in moisture and you're boned. I snagged the Huco cheap one, been fixed ever since. I finally saw the cracks in the old one when I took it off and it was easy to change. I have a 1997 Golf GTI 2.0 8v

Pros: easy to change, fixed issue
Cons: cracks let in moisture

it sounds like a problem im haveing with my ignition coil, i could be completely wrong though but anyways an easy way to test it is to start the car and mist the ignition coil with a spray bottle if the car shuts off u need a new one, i got one from germanautoparts.com for only $60 plus $10 shipping and i got it practically the next day.

Pros: easy way to test
