Ignition coil Bosch or OEM Audi

OEM Audi Ignition coil

So, I went to my VW/Audi dealers here in Tampa and purchased the stock RS7 spark plugs and RS3 ignition coils. The exhaust smelled slightly worse at startup after the change, but still went away shortly after startup. The idle was smoother but I attribute that to old stock coils and spark plugs.

Pros: smoother idle
Cons: exhaust smelled worse
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 60000 km

Bosch Ignition coil

I decided to order the OEM Bosch coil off of FCP Euro. Same issue about a 1/4inch too long. Being kind of annoyed and noticing that they're pretty much identical decided to pull the rubber boot off the old and swap it with the new one.

The car now runs a lot better, however, I think the slight difference in ignition coils is making the car run slightly choppy at high rpms

Pros: car runs a lot better
Cons: choppy at high rpms
Vehicle: Volvo S60

The Delphi coils are junk. Bosch updated the coils they offered and we've used the updated coil multiple times and never had to warranty a single one out in the 4 years we've been installing them.

Everytime we've used a Delphi in the past the white silicone on the boot degrades and falls apart in 6-12 months and customer cars came back with misfires again.

The old Bosch coils wear out because people don't do spark plugs and replacements on time. The old plugs end up with crazy gaps and it kills the coils. Usually at 100k-120k miles but honestly that's the normal lifespan of a pencil style coil regardless.

If you're plugs are old and you're beginning to experience misfires then save yourself the time do all 6 plugs and coils. Your N52 will thank you.

Pros: reliable, long lasting
Cons: silicone degrades, short lifespan
Mileage: 120000 km

9-3’s eat coils; it’s a forever problem on my 9-3 that it seems like every 30k miles I’m spending $200 on new coil packs. It’s essentially routine maintenance. I ordered Bosch OEM coil packs off RockAuto and just now realized they have a warranty. I submitted a warranty claim and they sent me out brand new units. Wish I would have known this because it would have saved me lots of money.

Pros: warranty replacement available, saved money
Cons: frequent failure, short lifespan
Vehicle: Saab
Mileage: 48280 km
