Head gasket OEM Toyota or OEM Subaru

OEM Subaru Head gasket
Bayer-GTi

Rating 5.0

The Tig won't need head gaskets at ~150k like every other subi does. The TSI pretty much has reliability nailed down now, IMHO. Change the oil and drive.

Pros: reliability nailed down
Vehicle: Volkswagen Tiguan
Mileage: 150000 km

Mine went at 160K so it’s coming soon. The single layered graphite that is on there now will always wear out quicker with time. It’s a “design flaw” and will always go out quickly.

Cons: failed at 160k, design flaw, wears out quickly
Mileage: 160000 km

OEM Toyota Head gasket

  • Overheating:
Rating 1.5

Mine went at 220k, 2015 Prius V. Fixed it myself but I had the tools/time/interest. If you’ve overheated already it’s probably warped the head, cheaper to get a new (used) engine, have them put a new head gasket on that engine before it goes it to ward off future trouble.

Cons: part failed, head warped
Vehicle: Toyota Prius
Mileage: 354000 km

the EJ25D, famous for blowing its head gasket and mixing oil and coolant inside the motor (in-laws had that happen, twice).

Cons: prone to blowing, mixes oil/coolant
Vehicle: Subaru Outback
