Engine oil Mobil or OEM Subaru
I switched to Mobil1 5w-30 shortly after purchasing my 99.5 1.8T and I haven't had any problems, as a matter of fact my cold-weather starts noticeably improved and oil temperatures seem to be consistently lower during normal operating conditions.
changed my oil two weeks ago to mobil 1 5w30 and she runs very smooth
I switched to Mobil1 synthetic. The factory fill oil is 0w30. I replaced it with Mobil1 0w40, it complies with all of the specifications, and is not that expensive.
I have been using mobil 1. Amsoil is very good also.
I would recommend using Mobil 1 0W40 with a Mobil 1 filter...noticed a great improvement, not only in the reduction of the noise, but the engine is quieter as well overall...
I would recommend Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40. This is what I use. A 40 weight oil will help out with your ticking sound.
I have been using 15W-50 Mobil 1 in the '92 Jetta for the past 130K miles (it has 264K miles total on it !!!). It doesn't leak or burn a drop and it is all original (best motor I have ever had!!!).
I recently tore down a Ford 302 V8 with over 300K miles on it which I know ran Mobil 1 all of it's life and it was just as clean as the new (Jasper) engine being installed! No varnish, sludge build up and virtually no wear!
I have found little if any inconsistancy from using Mobil 1 5W40, Redline, Royal Purple & Amsoil. Since Mobil 1 is much more readily available I chose to use that and works out great for me.
I Change my oil every 4000Km and use Mobil Delvac 1 5w40. You can get it at Walmart. I like the 5w40 because it his light enough if you have to start your car below freezing there is no oil starvation. It is also heavy enough that it protects well under high revs, high heat and heavy loads.
