I rebuilt a 1.6TD, my first rebuild about 16 years ago, and it had Mobil 1 15w50 since day one. I sold the car with 550,000 miles on the engine and it was still purring.

Pros: engine still purring
Mileage: 885139 km

AMSOIL Engine oil

Used the rotella for the first 90,000. Switched to AMSOIL so I can change the oil half as often. I'm good with either one. The car has 146,000 and runs as strong as ever.

Pros: change oil half as often, car runs strong
Mileage: 90123 km

Run Mobil 1 and you need nothing else. I change the oil every 10K, at 150K still going as strong as ever.

Pros: still going as strong
Mileage: 10000 km

When I bought my (new) 2002 Jetta, I did quite a bit of research on the various synthetic oils for turbo diesel engines. I came away the most impressed with Mobil Delvac-1 in the SILVER jug. The numbers that were available online seemed to suggest that this was one of the better choices. I've run Delvac-1 since my Jetta's first oil change. Not the cheapest synthetic out there, but I've been happy with what I've seen.

Pros: one of the better choices, happy with what I've seen
Cons: not the cheapest synthetic

Mine's had Mobile 1 since day 1. Up until 45K-ish it was 5w- or 10w-40(?) Anyway, I switched to 0w-40 and I know my milage is a tad better and I swear the seat of my pants tells me the engine has more... spunk.

Pros: better mileage, more engine spunk
Mileage: 45000 km

AMSOIL Engine oil

0w-40 weight oil is great for the VR6. I've been using either Mobil 1 or AMS European Formula (5w-40) in mine since day 1. 85k miles later it still runs like a champ. AMS Euro oil is fantastic stuff, definitly worth every penny.

Pros: runs like a champ, fantastic stuff
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 85000 km

Mobil Engine oil

0w-40 is a great oil for the VR6. It's not too thin. At operating temp, it's a 40-weight oil and viscosity-wise is no different than 5w-40 or 10w-40. It is thinner than these oils at start-up, which isn't a bad thing. I used 0w-40 for many miles without any issues and the engine is still in amazing shape at 211k+ miles. FYI, 0w-40 is used as factory fill in all Mercedes AMG engines. If it's not too thin for those beasts, then it's not too thin for a VR.

Pros: great oil, no issues, engine amazing shape
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 211000 km
