The STi also stops hard. It turned in the shorter braking distance of the two cars, using just 114.5 feet of asphalt to haul down from 60 mph. Pedal feel is firm and progressive, and ABS operation is quiet and refined.

Pros: firm pedal feel

Hi Black betty... here's the bottom line,.... if the S3 brakes can be purchased and fitted to your car within your budget, then buy the brakes. I've got S3 brakes on my Mk4 Gti, and beyond a dogbone mount, they're the best value mod possible. For performance road applications, the brakes are superb and miles beyond stock Gti brakes.

Pros: superb, best value mod

Subarus in general are frickin' bulletproof. (WRX transmissions aside) I drove a Subaru Legacy 30th Anniversary Edition (2.5 liter, automatic...I think it's pretty similar to the '97 Legacy GT) and it was a surprisingly good drive...good handling and pretty good power...brakes were a bit sucky, though.

Pros: good handling, good power
Cons: brakes were sucky

also, bang for the buck...a pair of used S4 brakes do the job for street driving that's what i'm running and it's marked improvement over the crappy stock brakes.

Pros: marked improvement
Cons: used
Vehicle: Audi S4
