Mahle Oil filter

I like the Mahle filter because it has a notched end on it, no need for a filter wrench anymore.

K&N Oil filter

I use mobil 1 0w-40 and k&n filters - when you buy a filter, get the oversized one that VW approved a while back - with k&n part number HP-3001 vs the stock HP-2005 - big ol' hoss filter but screws right on, takes an extra half quart of oil to fill it up

Pros: oversized filter, better cleaning
Cons: extra half quart needed
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Part number: HP-3001

Wix Oil filter

Clean Throttle Body, Clean MAF, Change air-filter if needed (manual recommends every two years unless you live in a dusty environment), change fuel filter ( depending on mileage or time. I do mine every two or three years, if it has never been done, do it). Run a good injector cleaner through (Chevron Techron if you can find it)the fuel system, then run another tank of gas through, and then do an oil change with synthetic oil and a good quality oil filter (Wix are good (napa) or any of the OE/OEM German filters like mann, mahle or bosch.).

Pros: good quality oil filter

Fram Oil filter

Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. These filters are manufactured by Allied Signal, Inc. Please do not buy these filters. By boycotting it, we may be able to cause some change. I have personally had one if these filters fail and actually cause engine damage due to bits of paper and glue floating around in the engine. For some inside dirt on Fram filters, see this email from an Allied Signal production engineer. " "Fram Extra Guard PH8A This filter cartridge has a small outside diameter with a rather low filter element surface area (193 sqin), and features cardboard end caps that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals against the cardboard and easily leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. If you have a noisy valve train at startup, this filter is likely the cause. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak all the time, but they often leak anyway. The backplate has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow, and is made of thin material.

Cons: causes engine damage, cardboard end caps, leaks dirty oil, plastic bypass valves
Part number: PH-8A
