Compared to the honda ones I don't notice a difference in the cabin air. They fitted fine and saved me about $20 bucks.

What finally seemed to help was replacing the cabin air filter (did myself in 3/2017) with one of the MANN charcoal filters (FP26 009 "Frecious Plus"). Perhaps this was just coincidental, but we have not experienced the problem since changing the filter.
You can get the engine and cabin filters on Amazon and save yourself $150+ dollars. Look up Mann filters (which is the same thing VW uses) for you year.
Might be a silly question, but have you considered building it to have a Mann CU 2038 fit it? Have been running those in my \"stock\" cabin air filter since the original filter is NLA.
I checked to make sure the cabin filter wasn't restricted (Mann filter less than a year old).
This is one of those things I do once a year. I live on dirt roads and 12-15K is about all I can take before needing to do a change.
Purchased OEM VW Charcoal Lined Cabin Filter / Fresh Air Filter and OEM VW engine Air Filter for $40 from ECS Tuning. Installed at 102k miles.
The HVAC smelled really musty from sitting so long, so I replaced the cabin air filter with a new Wix one.
Note that changing your cabin air filter could help too.
What soured my relationship with them was that I had replaced the cabin filter myself about 3 weeks earlier, checked it after they serviced it, and it was still my Hengst air filter (which I had marked with a few dots), and not a new one.
