I recently replaced my alternator on one car w/a new Bosch unit. Cost about $200 and took me a couple of hours. Dealer cost just for the part was $700 and with book time they priced it out at over $1,400.
To date the 4 cylinder Camry alternator is the fastest one I’ve ever replaced. From start to finish I think I spent 20 minutes on it.
only thing I've done is change a battery, an alternator and tires (weather checking).
Bosch Alternators have 2 posts on them, the big one is for main battery ground, the smaller one is for the exciter or blue wire. When the cars ignition switch is turned on, the Dash light (led and diode) applies 12V+ to the coils to excite them, so the alternator can produce a charge. When the Alternator is producing current and voltage it goes to 13.5-14Volts.
I had a Honda Odyssey do this for years. Finally took to Battery Plus. They checked my battery at the time (which was not having issues…yet) which they said was good. On a lark i asked if their device could tell if the alternator was okay. He said yes, did something on the meter, and then showed me on the screen the alternator showed “errors”. I had the alternator replaced and the dead batteries stopped happening.
Just bought and installed a Duralast Gold from Autozone last week for my '07 9-5. It has a little whine at 2500 RPM but works better than OEM. Has a lifetime warranty and it's 100% new too!
I order a Bosch AL113MX Reman Alternator (yep Bosch reman the Motorola) since that was what was currently in there. The 81 has a big square York compressor mounted right on top of the alternator which means that to get the rear alternator bolt you better have the right extensions and you are going to do it blind. So after at lot of effort I got the old alternator out and the new one in and only then did I notice that the pulley did not line up.
The alternator of my Corolla died. I bought a reman Denso alternator from RockAuto and made the swap. However, the new alternator makes a loud, screeching sound when I start the car. It goes away after a minute-ish.
The alternator (only component on the engine that wasn\u2019t replaced) was shot, negative terminal was busted, the only reason I had power was because the battery was new. Voltage regulator was also shot and showing a positive charge even while the A/C was turned off.
