No VW experience, but did have to replace the windshield on a 2016 Mazda 6 with all of the driver aids/cameras/sensors...same as the Golf R w/ DAP. I went with a local Novus guy who had good reviews. He's an owner/operator and did a great job. My insurance paid for an OEM windshield since the car was less than 18 months old.

I do use Mazda filter rather than aftermarket.
I'm pretty sure that modern Mazda's do do this, only not in the situation you're describing. They use it for their stop start system to save having to fit a beefier starter motor and what not, simply inject an extra dose of fuel and fire the spark plug to get the engine going again.
Buy an OEM thermostat from Mazda. The aftermarket ones are sometimes not identical.
Tires make more difference than anything. I too bought at used Mazda 3, and thought: "Oooh, this is dodgy in the rain . . ."
Then I got better tires (summers and winters) and realized: "Ohhh, I just had terrible tires."
ABSOLUTELY REPLACE THE CRANKSHAFT SEAL AND MAKE SURE WHOEVER DOES THE TIMING JOB REPLACES IT. Even ask for the old seal back.
I learned the hard way. Paid premium prices for a timing belt and water pump. They didn't replace the crankshaft seal, but said they did. Oil was leaking out. Found a mazda tech. They knew the problem on the spot, replaced seal, and gave me the old one which still had the original mazda part numbers.
The bigger brakes are strong, but the gearbox is obstructive. Steering response is instant and - to your eyes anyway - the MPS corners flat and hard. But wide, high, soft part-bucket seats send the opposite message to your brain , giving the uncomfortable impression the car is rolling in corners.
I got those in my cx5 but really they are mostly for looks because the light output is very poor.
My 2019 GTR fog lights are…well…lights. They really add nothing to visibility.
Are the lights even bright enough to make this worth it? OEM fog lights on the 2016 is trash
