Just buy the wole WP+ housing as an assembly. Who cares if it's OEM. I install Gates WP/Timing belt kits on many other cars and they are excellent. Better than OEM.

Pros: excellent, better than OEM

Gates Water pump

Gates is the brand everyone get and refers to for the water pump. Good quality and cheap enough. If you can't get gates. There are two main impeller designs. Cast and sheet metal tabs. Supposedly the cast impeller design performs better. So if you're ordering from a generic parts store, make sure it's the cast impeller design (but the sheet metal design works just fine).

Pros: good quality, cheap enough, cast impeller better

I just did my ej205 with a gates kit and all bearings were NSK/koyo/NTN and matched the originals that came out.

Pros: identical Japanese bearings, matched originals

Gates Thermostat
-PLP-
  • Slow warm-up:
Rating 4.0

Man, you just get the thermostat itself. Nothing more. Something like that was for 2008 Rabbit (2.5 I-5). Mine car had exactly same symptoms. It would reach 70 C and maybe at some point 80, but had tendency to stay cool (below 80) when driving. I know thermostat opens at 80 C, so anything below 80 is not quite right.

Pros: maintains 85 or more
Cons: tendency to stay cool
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Part number: 34800

Gates Drive belt

Rating 0.5

I changed my drive belt tensioner and belt about 1 month ago... I went aftermarket and bought gates for both (for an Accord 2006 A/T). Today, almost an hour into a drive, the belt shredded and the shredded part hit everything and was making a lot of noise. When I looked into it, it seems that one of the strands from the belt has come off... Just strange this issue surfaced after 2000km or so since installing, but maybe it's because the belt has expanded over this time?

Cons: belt shredded, strands came off, noisy
Vehicle: Honda Accord
Mileage: 2000 km

Mine broke in less than 500 miles and their replacement broke too (which I paid for till I returned them the faulty one back) in less than 500 miles on an Audi A1. Now they have my money for 2 water pumps and I paid for labour costs of replacing twice, and waiting for a refund decision for more than a month. AVOID!!!

Cons: broke quickly, replacement broke, costly labor, refund delay
Vehicle: Audi A1
Mileage: 805 km

OEM OEM OEM I have heard horror stories regarding the Gates Kit on this sub. Apparently they changed supplier and have much lower quality now. Same with other non-OEM parts, they are way more likely to go out early. When it’s your engine you’re risking, it’s worth it to just spend the couple extra bucks for the safety of 10 years worth of reliability on the belt and pulleys.

Pros: 10 years of reliability
Cons: lower quality now
