Tires Toyo or SUMITOMO

Toyo Tires

I had a set of Toyo Open Country AT III’s on my truck, 265/75R16 load range C. They made it 72k worth of construction truck use, trailer towing and some light trail use and snow in the PNW winters.

Pros: 72k worth of use
Mileage: 115873 km

I went with Solar 4XS+ available from Walmart. They are manufactured by Sumitomo tires. These came in really cheap at $350 for all 4 tires including lifetime balance and rotation and road hazard warranty at Walmart. These are 89 H rated, so a bit soft which cut down the road noise a lot compared to my previous Bridgestone Ecopia. Efficiency is the same as the Ecopias at 4.3 mi/kwh but they ride smooth and quiet.

Pros: smooth and quiet ride
Cons: bit soft
Mileage: 3000 km

I went with the Toyo Extensa HP II because it was a good compromise on price/efficiency/grip/noise. My biggest complaint with the OEM tires was that they hydroplaned worse than any tire I’ve had on a car since the 80s and these Toyos are much better. Range is down, maybe, 2-5%, maybe more on longer drives at speed, but EVERYTHING else about these tires is leagues better…ride, handling, noise, braking…everything.

Pros: better ride, handling, braking
Cons: range down 2-5%
Vehicle: Nissan Leaf

Toyos and Kumhos have served me well over tens of thousands of miles. Toyo Open Country AT3W and Kumho Crugen HT51. Michelins are known as the best tire for longevity and commuting.

Pros: served well, tens thousands miles

I had two sets on two trucks, loved them for the first 10k miles and after that they pulled to the right all the time and were quite loud. Getting alignments done didn’t help it pulling to the right and as soon as I got different tires the pull went away.

Pros: loved them first 10k miles
Cons: pulled to the right, loud
Mileage: 10000 km

Toyo Tires

Whatever you do, don't buy Toyo tires. They do not go well with the Sonic....worst traction of any tire I've ever had on a car in my 45 years of driving.

Pros: worst traction ever
Cons: bad traction
Vehicle: Chevrolet Sonic
