i changed my tires to XL (Eagle F1 Asymm's) and the problem is solved. i have hit some very nasty edges and haven't had any drama whatsoever... i believe it certainly would have been a replacement if it wasn't for the XL-strength sidewall.
My experience is that they balance just fine but yes, they do have a thin (2 ply nylon?) sidewall, which is why I inflate them to 51 PSI as per manufacturer's spec and they do great! This is a diesel Jetta so the fastest I've driven them at a constant speed was about 80mph from central Connecticut to midcoast Maine. I also drove the Jetta from Maine to Seattle 2 summers ago with over a thousand pounds of "stuff" in and on the car. They behaved just fine and did excellent in the horrible rainstorms I encountered in Illinois.
Had them on the Jetta for 2 years now. Great summer tire for general use. Don't expect it to handle sporty or go anywhere in the snow. But they do have a very low rolling resistance and will reward you with better mileage.
I have 10k on the Goodyear Eagle all seasons and so far so good. I love their aggressive-looking tread and they handle fine in the rain, but the jury is still out on snow performance.
I got the Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Seasons, and love them. They perform as good as the summer-only variation (not easy to find in many all-seasons), yet offer the security of being able to drive safely n low-temps/snow.
Yes they are. I replaced mine with Sumintano HTRZ IIIs and things quieted down considerably.
Like Tim said above, it depends on the tire. Some are more dedicated to pure dry weather grip, some have a better rain compound and tread. Like poster #2 above, I have Goodyear F1's. The reason I chose those is because they are just about unbeatable in the rain, it's like driving on a dry road. They can stand the car on it's nose under braking, and grip harder when turning. They give up very little in dry ultimate grip, too.
It depends on the tire. My Eagle F1 GSD-3's are *awesome* in the rain.
I have them on myh '06 and they're not bad as far as traction goes. The only drawback is, mine are half worn and they have gotten noisier than all hell.
buy anything but those tires when they wear out, they suck!
