We drive a FWD minivan or a RWD truck - both with good winter tires, Michelin X-ice on the minivan, Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3 non-studded on the truck.
I have Nokian Hakkapelitta studded tires and they\u2019ve been amazing the last 2 years living in Banff and I have a RWD car, drove to Calgary and back plenty of times, in snow storms and have driven to Jasper and BC in the winter with no issues.
Studded Nokian Hakkapelitta are awesome best snow tires i have had and as far studded tires increasing stopping in wet I have never noticed it and I believe it is minimal if any especially with the modern studded technology
Yes they are worth it. I\u2019ve had all types of winter tires. But the studded nokian hakkas are insane. Literally transformative.
I replaced the stock garbage dunlops with some Nokian “nordman” solstice 4 all weathers(Colorado). These are a hair louder than the stock tires since they don’t have EV foam but efficiency has been the exact same if not maybe slightly better. Ride is maybe a little harder but overall they’ve been great in the summer and during heavy rain.
Used to daily an NA Miata for years (based in PNW.) Had snow tires (hakkas) during winter and never had a problem.
I've bought the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 for one car... I feel the Nokians are the best.
I love driving RWD in winter, especially a good one with a torquey V-8 and a manual transmission like my BMW 550i. It handles so amazingly well in the snow, so effortless. Obviously, high quality winter tires like Nokian Hakkas are an absolute requirement.
I would skip the encompass aw01s. I had a set WR G3s and then a set of WR G4s and they were great with low noise and great traction. I then tried these since they were on sale, and I didn’t find them as good as the prior two sets of nokians. They seemed noisier and only excelled in standing water traction. Otherwise snow conditions seemed just average.
I have less than 25K on these tires. The tread is greater than 8/32 and I thought the cracking was part of the tread pattern. Then I noticed the tire was starting to flake apart on the tread.
I just had them replaced. I paid $800 for these tires 3 years ago. When they were sold to me they were already 1 year old. I called Nokian and they helped me find a shop that would support the warranty. The shop I bought them from would not provide any warranty support at all. This is also the shop that convinced me Nokian are good tires. I wish I had known. So frustrated that I just spend another bucket of money after 25k miles.
