I use General RT43's on all my cars. Good budget all season that is also (relatively) good in snow. Not pilot sports, but dont drive like an idiot and they won't do anything funny to you. Dealt with everything from a foot of snow to hydroplaning conditions, never had them do anything scary to me.
Wear is good, grip is good, handles a variety of weather conditions well enough, and never had a manufacturing defect on the 16 tires ive owned. IMO from the research ive done and my experience, they are the bang for the buck of any tire out there.
Yes, they are great tires. I currently run General Grabber ATXs on my truck and have ran General G-MAX performance tires on a previous car without issues.
I wouldn’t have any hesitations buying General Tires. They are made and distributed by Continental tire, which is generally a reputable brand. Have had experience with both their all season and winter tires in the past and never ran into any issues with them. I used the RT43, G-Max and Altimax Arctic with no problems. There are certainly much worse tires out there, these ones are a good buy.
I've been running the General Altimax tires. Great bang for the buck.
Finally settled on tire size, 275/55R20 General Grabber ATXs. I absolutely love these tires.
My initial impression of the Generals is that they are quite comfortable. Compared to the PSS, I think they definitely provide a better ride in normal driving situations. I’ve seen this is chalked up to a softer sidewall, and I can confirm that. Noise levels are good too.
In spirited driving, I think the Generals are perfect for the street. The main detractor I noticed is that they are a bit more vague than the PSS in the initial turn-in before providing that on-rails feeling of holding grip through corners. My unofficial test for grip is seeing if I can double the recommended speed that you can see on a sweeping on ramp or exit. The Generals delivered without much drama. These tires are perfectly at home on a windy back road as well.
After one week of ownership I purchased a new set of General Altimax rt43's (replaced the OEM Conti's) that are rated V, max 149 mph. They have worn like iron, have great grip and are very quiet, even after 20k miles.
I've been happy with General Altimax RT43 tires on my previous cars, good balance of quality and price for an all around tire.
I have the Generals on my jetta. I don't think they're as good as the Michelin MXV4s that came on the jetta (those tires were the greatest in the world). But they are close and for half the price.
I've had bad experiences with 2 out of 5 General Tire Exclaim UHP's I've bought. First tire had a terrible vibration from day 1. When the tire shop mounted my tires, they said one balanced fine, but may have a "hop" at highway speed. Well, the "hop" was very noticeable. When the wheel was on the back, the car shook so bad on the highway I literally could not drink coffee without spilling on myself. When the wheel was mounted on the front, the steering wheel would shake so bad my hands would go numb. I had this tire replaced under warranty and the car drove great. A couple weeks ago, after coming into town from a highway commute, I could hear a loud rhythmic humming at around 50 km/h. Tire shop again tried re-balancing this wheel with no improvement. Tire has hardly any wear and wheel itself looks to be in great condition. I didn't hit any rocks of potholes before this started. This is getting really annoying. I just want a reliable tire.
