I think it is a great idea for the right situation. I take my 15' aluminum boat out 3-4 times a year and the lake is just 1 mile away, but there are always cops around the lake and they will pounce on you if your lights are not working, so it is a perfect solution for me.
In the early years (1998-99), it ran simple bolt-ons (intake, exhaust, header, no cat, software, pulleys, ac delete, LSD), but that's about it. The car did struggle on the top end grunt sometimes, but the torque was definitely there coming out of the corners...
I use Falken myself.

I had 225-40-18 912's on 18x8 and I loved the gentle curve I had, But I didnt keep those wheels for long so I cant talk about tire wear but they gripped reallly well.
I run 235/35/19 on a 19x8.5 up front. Koni coils, occasionally rubs on hard cornering or uneven pavement, but I'm pretty low so... Falken 452's
I ran a set of the Falkens on my last Jetta. I drive aggressively and I ate them up faster than they spun. I believe they were the ZE 912s. The hydroplaning resistance wasn't as great for me and I could break them out of traction without too much effort.
