Tires Cooper or GENERAL TIRE
I'll be putting on the General Altimax Arctics that have gone on the wife's 3 for the last few years. They're unkillable. Too bad the car is still mediocre in the snow due to the light weight over the drive wheels and the traction (out of) control. The Frontier will need a decent set of A/T's to get through the winter. Been thinking the Cooper Discoverer AT/3. I've gotten almost 50k out of the stock tires, not bad IMO. The Mini will have to soldier on with the crappy all seasons that are on it right now. It will not likely see much, if any, snow.
I've run General Altimax Arctics for years. Probably gone through 3-4 different sets on various WRX/STI, MQB cars, always happy with them. I did get a used set of wheels with Michelin XI3's and they're pretty okay for my current MK7. Pretty ok in dry weather but I found they didn't do great compared to the Altimax on a prior Mk7 GTI.
I've got Altimax Arctics for both the Focus and BRZ. The Fit uses all-seasons all-season and does OK. I think the X-Ice 2's I had before the Generals had the edge on actual ice but both tires are excellent in the snow.
Running 30.9" Cooper A/T3-4S (235/75R17) on 17x8" rims AND a 1.5" lift I wish I had gone bigger on my tires
I've had these on my past 3 cars (Audi A3 and two Tiguans) and love them, especially given the price. Not the quietest tire but extremely competent in wet, snow, and ice conditions, with good treadwear.
Monday night, I put Cooper CS3's on the front and balanced the garbage West Lakes that are on the rear. All 4 were surprisingly round and none of the rims bent. I can now get around corners faster dry and wet, and can oversteer the car pretty easily when near the limit.
Cooper Discoverer AT3. Good dry and wet grip. Low road noise. Wheels halfway decent.
I am so tempted to put some Cooper AT/3s on mine. The stock Continentals are not great and I have already picked up two screws in 3 months. I never got any holes in 50k miles on the AT/3s on my Pathfinder.
It finally came down to the Cooper Discoverer AT/3. The reviews I read and watched said it has good wet road traction and does decent off road. My experience for the last 50k miles on them supports that conclusion.
I switched my winter tires for summers back on the Miata and noticed something odd. There are parts of the tread in the center on every tire that just seemed to have fallen off at some point. I bought the tires in 9/2015 and they had a 1012 build date. I was quite upset with Tire Rack that they would send me 3.5 year old tires advertised as new but they said there was nothing they could do. I ran them winter of 2015/2016 and again this current 2016/2017 winter. Last year they didn't have this separation and I have no idea what happened. I don't think it's something small that I ran over since it happened to all 4 tires. They're 175/65/14 General Altimax Arctics by the way.
