When I did the change at home-used the motor craft filter FL190S and mobile 1 full synthetic for $35.00. Biggest pain at home is removing the panel under the chassis.
I’ve found them to be good
Personally I’ll ONLY use the manufacturer filters on my vehicles and I’ll look through the catalogs to find the largest filter that fits. I’ve been using Motorcraft FL1As on my pu for the 28 years I’ve owned it and it’s cheap insurance.
Filter Used : K&N HP-1008 (has a nut built into the filter for a 1" socket; recommended)
I have used K&N oil filters my entire life and never once had one leak from the nut portion of the filter housing
I run K&N filters and mobil-1 5W-30 at 350k km
I've always had good luck with the FL 820s in a 3.0.
Engine carbon cause the dirty looking oil no filter can get rid of the carbon color and I don't wait 5000 miles I change every month but put on 500 km every week highway also your oils detergents could have cleaned some crap from engine I would do a change sooner myself am switching to Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w 30 and k&n gold for maximum flow rate/ oil pressure and 30 micron rating (70 micron is human hair) year round I've got about 335,000 km on Buick Lucerne 3800 series and aiming for 500,000 I used wix XP for years bought bulk from rockauto and got carbon black every change including my ram1500 only 150,000 km highway
K&N is probably the most annoying with the rounded off nut they expect you to use to get the filter off. I'll never buy one of those again.
K&N oil filters on the other hand, are like the thread count myth for bedsheets. You are paying a shitton more for 480 Egyptian cotton you'll throw out in 3000 mi.
