Engine oil VALVOLINE or AMSOIL

VALVOLINE Engine oil

  • Exhaust smoke:
Rating 4.0

Using high mileage oil (additives to make gaskets swell just a tad bit), used to burn almost a quart between 5k miles but now it's maybe half a quart.

Pros: reduced oil burning
Mileage: 160000 km

AMSOIL Engine oil

  • Engine noise:
Rating 5.0

The dreaded Pentastar tick is GONE! It took about a week of regular use for the noise (on the passenger side of the top of the engine) that used to show up after idling for a few minutes to completely disappear with the new oil. I’m sure plenty of oils work fine but I went with Amsoil because my brother gave me a gift card and referral coupon for my birthday. I run 6 qts because I already have the Baxter spin-on adapter. Which requires a little more oil. The dipstick reads “low” at 5 qts whether I’m idling or checking it after the Jeep has been off for ten minutes. With 6 qts it sits right and holds a steady 30 PSI and never spikes. Such a relief!

Pros: noise disappeared, holds steady PSI
Cons: dipstick reads low at 5 qts

VALVOLINE Engine oil

I do like Valvoline R&P and it is in fact cleaning up two older, normally aspirated cars I have with oiling and ring issues, installed in one Lexus and one older Acura (Isuzu).

Pros: cleaning up older cars
Cons: HTHS is very mediocre
Vehicle: Lexus
