If you want it quiet and smooth, run 10w-40. If you want best mpg or live in the cold 1/2 the year, run 5w-30. 10w-30 is a-ite in many cases. It'll burn less than 5w-30....generally.
Given that it's almost guaranteed that this was not a turbo engine originally (the lack of factory air filter is another clue) she'll run hotter than usual and so a quality oil is a good investment.
Kendall hands down makes the best dinosaur oil..... I run it in my BMW 2002 and my 94 2.0 ....
i run 0w30 in my jetta 2.0. fully synth. have for 33,000 miles, no problems, other then better gas mileage
Personally I use 8-10k change intervals on my Jetta, its rated for that, and i use the right oil.
