Replacement of upper strut mount indeed took care of the clunking issue we had with the car.
Owner reviews for strut mount
Replacing the HD mounts with OEM mounts definitely seem to have solved the problem as I haven't heard any noises in years.
Update. Dealer did strut mounts, and other parts related to strut mounts? I haven't gotten my paperwork yet, they're supposed to email it to me. But they did mounts for sure, I believe end links, and did an alignment. Squeaks are all gone, for now. Alltrack drives excellent.
Looks like for some it is the bearings. For me, it was the strut mounts.
Figured I should give an update to anyone who was interested. I finally decided to just replace the HD mounts for some OEM VW ones. Haven't really had any problems since although sometimes I swear I still hear the same noises just much much fainter.
I replaced my front strut mount/bearing when installing new set up yesterday and the new VW OEM mounts did not have the tab on the edge like the original ones did that when installed you have pointed forward, the new VW OEM mounts have an arrow on top of mount that I you have pointed towards front of the car when installed.
Josh at GAP (GermanAutoParts.com) recommended these parts...my mechanic is semi-against aftermarket parts, especially anything not made in Germany, since the parts do not fit correctly sometimes. Josh said the HD strut mounts are made by Meyle
Personally I've had bad luck with KYB strut mounts and bearings getting noisy. And in my experience they are too harsh.
My front strut mounts are shot. They are Febi mounts purchased approx 10 years ago. Rubber has been cracked for a while and the right one just started 'clunking' through pot holes and bumps.
I took the caps off my Febi German strut mounts today. They have less than one year and 3k miles on them. The driver side has collapsed already.
