Engine oil Shell or Lucas

Shell Engine oil

Rotella is the best you don’t even need the synthetic. I run it in my 6 bolt 4G63 with 222,000 miles on it pushing 400 wheel horsepower and I’ve been a truck driver for 29 years it’s the industry standard????????

Pros: best, industry standard
Mileage: 222000 km

Rotella T6 ftw! I swapped my F800GS' oil to this and HifloFiltro filters years ago and have had zero issues. ~$30 for a full change compaired to BMW's asking price of $23/quart (straight highway robbery) and $20/filter so it was a no brainer saving almost $60/change

Pros: zero issues, saving money
Vehicle: BMW

Brings me back to my WRX days, we all used to run Rotella T6 because it burned less oil thru our gigantic subaru ring gaps.

Pros: burned less oil
Vehicle: Subaru

I always used Rotella 5w30 gas truck oil designed for “All Mileage” in my 2005 Nissan Frontier with 95k but it’s been discontinued. I really liked this oil as it seemed to be thicker and remained viscous for longer compared to others. My favorite part about it? NO LEAKS!

Pros: no leaks, viscous for longer
Cons: discontinued
Vehicle: Nissan
Mileage: 95000 km

Lucas Engine oil

Right now I have some Lucas High Performance, but the brand is relatively immaterial to me. As long as it's a reputable brand and it meets the spec in the manual.

Pros: meets manual spec
Cons: brand relatively immaterial

Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 in my 09 e90 335d (m57)

Supposedly should be changed every 13k miles but I do 7500 to hopefully help extend the life of the timing chain.

Pros: extended timing chain life
Vehicle: BMW

I’ve a 01 330ci with 284kms on it and I’ve been running Rotella 5w-40 T6 for a few years and it’s been really good. Keeps it good and clean for 10k change intervals. I probably end up adding 2-3L over that time, which was a vast improvement from when I got the car 30k ago.

Pros: really good, keeps clean
Cons: adding 2-3L
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 284 km

G60 Carat said: Speaking of Rotella, Here's a personal observation of mine. My beater Saturn 1.9 has a lifter tick (not fixing it, don't care), so I just put in Rotella T, and it quiets it up a bunch! But last oil change I just used the 20w50 I had on the shelf for the VW, since it's in pieces anyways. Despite the heavier oil, the lifter tick is louder with 20w50 that it was with 15w40 Diesel oil.

Pros: quiets lifter noise
Cons: louder lifter tick
