I had this issue in an old 2.0l cabrio with 165k miles on it. I eventually had to ensure I used a mann filter and 10w40 oil at all times. Never had a problem again. The better filter flows better and the heavier oil creates more pressure at the higher temps.
This is the reason I love Mercedes-Benz. The Mann filters use a fleece media rather than paper, and I have customers that routinely abuse their oil change intervals (20k miles) and they still held up. Paper filters don't hold up or filter very well much past 5 thousand miles.
I would rather run a Mann oil filter than an oem/VW filter. Same thing for the air filter.
double check the oil filter: stick with the brand name MANN or oem. make sure that you put some oil on the rubber gasket before you re install the filter housing to make sure you have a complete seal. also put some fresh oil in the filter housing that way you do not starve your motor of oil when you start it up.
I only use Mann oil filters.
VW uses castrol syn. 5w-40. With their filter, I think manufactured by Mann. I've been using that but just recently switched to lubro moly 5w-40 with a Mann filter
To change oil for a 2011 VW golf, you do need a special oil filter wrench (14 Points, 74mm),as the new german cars are using a cartridge type oil filter. I got mine from ebay, made of cast aluminium, works like a charm.
As far as oil filters go, if things haven't changed since I sold my old Jetta, Fram, K&N and possibly others all sell the same filter made by Mann. They are literally identical to the Mann and original VW filters. Buy which ever one you can find for cheap.
in my ABA im running MANN filter and just changed to Royal Purple 15w40. car LOVES IT, easily running its best since i rebuilt the motor.
I loath pulling out the Mann filter that I use on my AMU motor. Total pain especially when the thing is like 200 degrees. Barely fits through but it always gets out of there somehow.
