On an LS motor, IIRC, it's a rather easy DIY job, if you buy one outside the dealer you may be able to buy one cheaper but get a good quality one, like an AC Delco which is OEM.
I would get a Denso or AcDelco reman, no cheap crap since they're a bit of a pain to replace.
I would rather do it once and have it last for 100k+ than to do that repair 2x.
They suck , they break , they are brittle when old its Ford engineers fault !
splurged on a new AC Delco that lasted three months.
Replaced starter motor and battery within 30,000 miles in my 2015 F150
Ive just put the 3rd starter on my truck ('94 f150 w/351w) in about 2.5 years. All Delcos sense thats all I can get quickly here. The first one quite entirely and the last one still spun but would not engage the flywheel.
Ford had to upgrade their starters shortly after the rule started because they kept blowing out real quick.
My moms f150 just lost its starter at 40k miles because of auto stop/start...
